About Sanford

Snuggled between the south shore of Lake Monroe and the north shore of Lake Harney, Sanford is the perfect “front door” for what is now called Central Florida. The St. John’s river flows through Lake Monroe giving access to delightful adventures in your own boat or many that can be rented at the downtown marina.

Sanford’s rich history dates back to the mid 1700’s when the Timacuan Indians and later the Seminole Indians, inhabited and thrived on the shores of Lake Monroe. In 1870, Henry Shelton Sanford bought 12,600 acres and laid out the community of Sanford. It eventually incorporated in 1877 taking with it the small community of Melonvillle. Until 1940, agriculture dominated Sanford’s economy, specifically celery crops, thus nicknaming the town Celery City.

Sanford, the county seat of Seminole County, was the perfect Florida small town for many years. It retains many of the historical neighborhoods and downtown area while blending them with all the good of the new. This historical nostalgia has had a positive effect on Sanford’s rapidly growing waterfront community, estimated at over 50,000 residents and continuing to thrive.

Major employers in Sanford include Seminole State College, Seminole Town Center Mall, and Orlando Sanford International Airport. Schools are excellent, parks abundant, and the international airport makes traveling a pleasure. All sports abound – professional and individual. Within an hour or an hour and a half, you can be on either seacoast, the many theme parks or just stay at home in Sanford and enjoy your town.
